Doctoral Research Scholarship 2027-2028 (B2)
A doctoral research scholarship from the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ) worth $25,000 a year for up to 12 terms, to a maximum of $100,000, for students undertaking or pursuing a research doctorate (a PhD with a research thesis) in any of the FRQ's research areas. You can apply as a Canadian citizen or permanent resident with a valid RAMQ card, or, without one, with proof of admission to a Québec university program or your research supervisor's consent, provided you then study in Québec.

Who can apply
Your program must be a research doctorate: it must lead to a PhD degree and the writing of a research thesis. Essays, research reports, dissertations and articles do not qualify, and professional doctoral programs and doctoral programs offered only part time are not eligible. There are two ways to be eligible: (1) you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident with a RAMQ card that is valid at the competition deadline (or proof that you have applied for one, or are renewing it); or (2) if you do not meet those conditions, you can still apply with proof of admission to a program of study at a Québec university or a consent form from your research supervisor, but you must then carry out your studies in Québec and cannot use the scholarship for a cotutelle program with a university outside Québec. To study outside Québec you need route 1. Under route 2 you must be physically present in Québec throughout the funding, except university break periods; travel outside Québec may be allowed only if it is essential to your program and does not exceed 180 days per year or 180 consecutive days, with a request signed by your research supervisor and approved by the FRQ. There are two components. Regular component: you must have been enrolled in a doctoral program for no more than 14 full-time terms before May 1, 2027 (no more than 20 full-time terms in the graduate programs involved if you moved directly from a bachelor's degree or fast-tracked from a master's); if you are not yet enrolled, your program must begin in the 2028 winter term at the latest. Also in the Regular component: if awarded, you can receive a maximum of 12 payments within the first 15 terms of your doctoral studies, and a second doctorate is eligible only in a different discipline, and only if your first doctorate was not funded by the FRQ through its training award competitions; you must attach a demonstration that the new application will be evaluated by a different review committee, or the FRQ may refuse it if the two degrees are too similar. Re-Entering Research component: you must have held an undergraduate or master's degree for at least five years at the competition deadline, and you must not have been enrolled in a graduate program, or have earned university credits, for at least five years at the competition deadline (you may be in your first term at the deadline). Extensions or exemptions to the eligibility period may be granted for parental leave, major family obligations, health reasons or a handicap, with supporting documents. You are not eligible if you are enrolled in certain psychology programs, if you apply to more than one of the FRQ's training award programs (B1, B1M, B1DP, B2, B2M, B2DP, B3, B5) in the same year, or if you have received or are receiving a research award from a Québec or Canadian granting agency (such as FRQ, CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC) for this or any other doctoral program whose total value is equal to or greater than the FRQ scholarship. You cannot hold more than one FRQ training award at a time, and you cannot apply for a scholarship for preparatory studies.
How to apply
Apply online in the Application space of the FRQnet portal, which requires an FRQnet account. The application form must be completed in French; attached documents may be in French or English, official documents in any other language need a certified professional translation, and other documents in any other language need a basic translation. Attachments must meet the FRQ's presentation standards for PDF attachments, or the application may be disqualified without notice. You choose the program component, the FRQ sector (Nature and Technologies, Health, or Society and Culture) and the review committee yourself, and the FRQ will not transfer an application filed in the wrong place. You attach your RAMQ card (or proof of application or renewal), or else proof of admission to a Québec university program; up-to-date, official transcripts for all your university studies (the transcript for your current program must be issued July 2026 or later, even if it shows no grades or credits yet, and must show all grades from the last term you completed before the deadline, including the summer term if applicable); if you were enrolled part-time or not enrolled for one or more terms since your program began, an official notice from the registrar's office, or another official university document, listing those terms; honours (up to 1 page); an integrated background presentation (up to 1 page); relevant experience and achievements (up to 4 pages); a research project description (up to 2 pages); and a bibliography (up to 1 page). If you must study in Québec and cannot provide proof of admission, your research supervisor must submit a consent form through their own FRQnet account before you can submit your application. Missing required documents make the application ineligible, and nothing can be added after the deadline. At the deadline your application's status in the FRQnet portal must be 'Submitted to the Fonds'; an application with any other status is inadmissible. Results are announced at the end of April 2027, and you have 30 days after the notice is posted to the FRQnet portal to accept or refuse an offer.
